Crimson Lake, Alberta
Just before my 70th birthday I posted a piece about all the things I am going to avoid in my elder years. The list included all the annoying things old people do and ended on a cocky note that went something like; “Hold My Beer!”, and a photo of me waterskiing.

The photo was taken on my 65th birthday, but I fully intended to repeat the achievement on my 70th.
But, before we get to that, Riley and Taylor gave me a book for my birthday, with an origami tie on the wrapper. Because 70-year-olds and 9-year-olds have a lot in common, I wore the tie most of the evening.
Which drew more than a few comments about my resemblance to a certain cartoon bear.

I brushed it off as good-natured birthday ribbing and prepared to show the kids and the in-laws that the old guy is still flexible enough to ski like this:

Marshall went first, to get the boat warmed up. He nailed some jumps, then it was my turn.

There is no photo record of my 70th birthday water skiing excursion, because it didn’t happen. I do, however, have some nice footage of the Rocky Mountain House Hospital waiting room, and x-rays of a badly bruised and bloated leg.
