“For Family, For Honour”

King Arthur – Legend of the Sword

Our Wells forebears originated in a region of Northwest England known in ancient times as The Land of the Cumbrians, an ill-defined territory bordering Scotland to the north and the Irish Sea to the west.  This sparsely populated, rugged territory is where the Wells side of our family began.

The region is ripe with history and mythology.  This is the legendary home of King Arthur, Guinevere, and the Knights of the Round Table.  Many believe that Carlisle Castle in the north is Camelot.

Known as The Lake District, with beautiful Lake Windermere as its centrepiece, Cumbria is England’s summer playground.

But it hasn’t always been this way.  For centuries Cumbria was a battleground as England and Scotland fought for unity or independence, depending on which side you were on.

In Roman times, Cumbria is where Celtic Britons made their stand, along Hadrian’s Wall.  The Romans advanced no further, but the battlefields of Cumbria ran with the blood of our ancestors as they held their ground against the mighty Roman Empire.

For the Wells family, Cumbria is home.  This is where we started and where we belong.

We are …

… Cumbrians.

Of course most English people know that King Arthur’s court was in Somerset and that the site of Camelot was near Cadbury Hill. If not there, then Tintagel in Cornwall. Beware of northerners trying to sell you false hopes, they may have some cheap swamp land up near this lakes too 🙂
