Cu Nim Airport, Alberta
When I sold my Cessna in June, I assumed I had made the last entry in my logbook. Today, my lawnmower came to the rescue, and I have another hour of flight to add.
It started here.
My friend, Gervais Goodman took this photo from his back yard.
Ignore the clouds, the trees, the mist, the sky, and the sunrise-lit foothills, and focus your attention on the finely mowed grass in the foreground.
Gervais wanted to subdue some gnarly undergrowth in his yard, so he borrowed my diesel mower to do it. The old Kubota performed well, and Gervais showed his appreciation by presenting me with a flight certificate from the local glider club.
Armed with my Cu Nim Gliding Club gift certificate, I showed up at the airport east of Diamond Valley today and went for a flight.
Bear and Gervais came out to witness and record the event.
Most of the photos in this post are courtesy of Gervais Goodman, (check out his Facebook page for a truly inspired collection of photography).
The Club wouldn’t let me fly by myself on the first try, so a very capable glider pilot, “Josh”, took care of the takeoff, landing, and most of the flying in between.
I took the controls for a few shallow turns and altitude changes.
A looming Chinook hadn’t yet released its rolling winds, so the flight was tranquil.

Piloting a glider isn’t much different than an airplane. Other than a missing engine and propeller, they are very similar. Either way, flying characteristics of winged equipment is much better than …
