Right-of-Way

Millarville, Alberta

I have a title deed for this place, but bears have been roaming these hills since forever.  Technically, I am the trespasser.

Not that I was going to argue the point.  Coming between a momma Black Bear and her cub (dark spec on the far right in the first photo) is likely to result in me ranking second in an altercation.

No trail-cam will ever win a Best Picture award, but I get more joy from the photos our tree-mounted camera generates than from a Hollywood film.

I don’t check the camera very often. It takes photos of deer every day, and more than a few of me doing chores, but every so often something interesting wanders through.

Here are a few photos taken by the tree-cam.

Bear took this portrait of a moose dining on cotoneaster bushes out her office window, and I took the photo of Buck Hedge-Trimmer out my office window.

This fox raised a litter of pups under our deck last spring.

Wildlife usually stays on the outside of the house, usually….

This Black Bear was very interested in coming inside (Terri) Bear’s office. His request was denied.

Critters out here usually travel alone; occasionally they visit in great numbers.

We don’t always see the creatures we live with, but they see us.  Sometimes they leave evidence of their presence, or sometimes presents.

Most of the animals we live with don’t frighten us.  Even the Cougar and the Black Bear, don’t have much interest in eating a couple of sinewy old-timers.

But the Grizzly Bear who left this paw print gives us pause for concern.

I haven’t seen the giant bear since, but if she comes back, I will definitely give her the …

… Right-of-Way.
