Amazonian, Ecuador

Quito, Ecuador is a modern city with cosmopolitan infrastructure and international trade connections.

Less than 500 km to the east, over the Andes Mountain range in the upper Amazon River basin, there are people who have never had contact with modern society.  An estimated 200 – 300 people of the Tagaeri tribe live a traditional hunter-gatherer existence in the Ecuadorian jungle.  These semi-nomadic people have subsisted for millennia without modern influences or technology.

Even though we will never meet them, there is some satisfaction in knowing that there are still people in the world who don’t know what an airplane is and have never eaten a Big Mac.

Since 2007 Ecuadorian national policy mandates: untouchability, self-determination, equality, and no contact, but based upon the number of photos available on the internet, Ecuadorian Amazon tribes may be the world’s most contacted…

… Uncontacted People.
