Uncle Russ’ Worms-in-Dirt

The best meal I ever served was Banana Splits for Breakfast.  Every kid who visited us at the cabin over the years was served the dish.  It was long on fruit and short on ice cream, but everybody loved it.  Decades later, I still get compliments and fond memories for serving the treat.

The second-best recipe I concocted at the cabin was Worms-in-Dirt.  It is not usually a breakfast thing, although it could be.

I haven’t made it for a while but my grandniece and nephew are coming for a visit today, so I whipped one up.  Here is how it is done:

Ingredients:

  • ½ leftover Chocolate Cake, no icing (“leftover” chocolate cake is rare, fresh cake will do in a pinch.)
  • 1 box Jell-O Chocolate Pudding mix.

Remember when these wheels came in the Jell-O box?

Those were the good old days!

  • ½ tub Dream Whip, partially thawed
  • 1 cup Chocolate Chips
  • 1 large can Cherry Pie Filling (optional, some kids and some adults, don’t like it)
  • 1 package Gummy Worms (available at fine grocery stores and bait shops everywhere).

Method:

Pour the cherry pie mixture into the bottom of a clear bowl.

Crumble the chocolate cake in a separate bowl and mix it with chocolate pudding, chocolate chips, and Dream Whip. Add a few worms for texture.

Pour the cake mixture over the cherries.

Place Gummy Worms on top, with some wiggling out of the mixture and some hanging from the edge of the bowl.

Lick the spoons, the bowl, and the pie filling can (optional).  Refrigerate until the kids arrive.

Serve in clear bowls, with extra worms, as required.

Hardly anybody mentions it when you cook a gourmet meal.  If you want kitchen applause that lasts for decades, try serving …

Uncle Russ’ Worms-in-Dirt.
