Merzouga, Morocco
Mascara comes from the Hebrew word Mesaqqeroth meaning, “flirting with the eyes”.
A reference is found in the Bible, Isaiah 3:16
16 The Lord says,
“The women of Zion are haughty,
walking along with outstretched necks,
flirting with their eyes,
strutting along with swaying hips,
with ornaments jingling on their ankles,”
Which, according to scripture, is a bad thing?
Isaiah 3:17 goes on to say;
“Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion;
the Lord will make their scalps bald.”
Which would be a shame.
Antimony, the mineral ingredient that gives mascara its luminescent quality is mined near Merzouga. The soft lustrous rock is ground into powder and mixed with oils to produce eye-enhancing make-up.
Nomadic tribes have used mascara for centuries as a beauty product but also to protect themselves from trachoma and other infectious eye diseases.
Ostensibly, the God that made Penelope Cruz and Ana Moura, also made the mineral antimony. If He didn’t intend for women to use it, why did God create…
