Cocaine

Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

We have a neighbour here on Madeira who battles drug addiction. He is clean now, but drugs and alcohol defined his life for decades.

Addiction started with sugar as a child, he couldn’t get enough of it. In his teens and early adulthood, his drug of choice was alcohol.  Later in life, cocaine and heroine were added to his list of intoxicants.

Born to an unwed 16-year-old, our neighbour was raised by his grandparents.  He met his mother for the first time when he was nine years old; he never knew his father.

Romantic relationships were difficult.  By his own words, “I never had much love for myself, so I didn’t know how to love anybody else”.

Our neighbour, who lives in this house with demons, is among the greatest guitar players on the planet.

At 80 years old, Eric Clapton’s drug dependency is behind him. He speaks freely about his battle with addiction in interviews and provides financial and personal support for drug rehabilitation programs.

In February last year, Eric Clapton bought a seaside retreat on the island of Madeira. Newspaper articles at the time described the property as, “a fantastic villa, located in a quiet area, with lots of privacy and panoramic views over the bay of Funchal”.

You don’t buy a house on a remote island in the Atlantic if you are seeking human contact.  I am not going to wander down the beach in anticipation of encountering the guitar legend.

I will however sit here and share a line of…

Cocaine.

If you got bad news

You want to kick them blues

When your day is done

And you want to ride on cocaine

H’mmm. It’s Wednesday morning here, I think I’ll stick to a walk followed by coffee and toast. Mind you there are lots of walking blues & coffee related songs. Toast blues, I’m not so sure. I guess there could be the burnt toast blues?
I woke up this morning ( repeat a few times and strum a slightly out of use e minor chord on your guitar )
My toast was done and burnt man, there’s gonna be some walkin’ (to Alicja’s) done -change to a country beat, still slightly out of tune
‘Cos my truck is bust, my old hound up a died and my woman took my Tesla. Repeat till the bar opens.
    Cocaine……
