Can you keep a secret? Good, I am about to reveal something I was sworn to never tell anyone.
Last night Bear and I attended the Vienna State Opera House for an operatic performance of Romeo and Juliette. It didn’t go as planned.
The Vienna Opera House is the preeminent venue for opera, worldwide. The prestigious institution has been entertaining kings and commoners for 150 years.
Charles Gounod’s production of Romeo and Juliette is the epitome of operatic entertainment.
Bear and I donned formal attire and arrived early to find our premier seats, on the floor, just behind the orchestra.
1700 tuxedoed and gowned patrons filled the seats around us and the curtain went up.
The orchestra and performers filled the grand house with orchestral music and theatrics.
When the performance broke for intermission. Bear and I stepped out to the foyer for some fresh air. She looked at me, I looked at her…..
One of us: Do you care if we see the second half?
The other: Not really.
Both: Good, let’s wander the plaza and get a bite.
And that is what we did. Dressed to the nines, forsaking tickets that cost more than I care to mention, we found a street-side Italian café and enjoyed an evening in line with our tastes.
You get to a certain age, and it is time to embrace exactly who you are.
Apparently, this is not us.
I might go back to the Vienna State Opera House, but if I do it will be to see Opus perform …
