Rough-Cut Diamonds

Bear and I were at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco last night to attend our first-ever Stones concert. The rock icons are promoting their Hackney Diamonds album.

Levi’s Stadium is not an intimate setting. We were seated with 68,500 of our closest friends, in the central section.  You could hardly see Keith Richards’ wrinkles from where we sat.

The playlist included songs from all seven decades The Rolling Stones have been making music. It was difficult to tell which were oldies and which came later, every song The Stones have ever done has an edgy “mother would not approve” quality.

Honkey Tonk Woman – 1968

I met a gin-soaked, bar-room queen in Memphis

She tried to take me upstairs for a ride

She had to heave me right across her shoulder

‘Cause I can’t seem to drink you off my mind

Angry -2024

The wolf’s at the door with the teeth and the claws
My mouth’s getting sore, I can’t take anymore
Why you angry with me?
Why you angry?

If a budding rock band started today (let’s call them The Stoned Rollers), they would still have to be performing in the year 2087 to match the longevity of The Rolling Stones, assuming the Stones stop performing this year, which is unlikely.

The concert was everything we expected, from The Stones antisocial logo,

to Mick Jagger’s massive on-stage presence,

and Keith Richards, gritty and enigmatic persona,

to mild-by-comparison, Ronnie Woods,

remembering, Charlie Watts, and some past and present musical giants,

The Rolling Stones are an enduring mix of …

… Rough Cut Diamonds.
