When the kids were young, we would sometimes take them out for fancy dining at Earl’s. Fancy food takes time to prepare, so Bear and I had to find ways to keep everybody entertained while we waited for our orders.
On one of our first visits, I discovered that the silverware at Earl’s is magnetic. Every time we dined there, we would wile away hungry minutes doing science experiments with the cutlery.
The waiters thought we were nuts, but it kept our young diners entertained.
Bear and I dropped in for dinner at a new Earl’s location on the south end of Calgary this week. The kids have grown and gone, but I am happy to report that the restaurant still has magnetic forks and knives!
Earl’s silverware isn’t silver at all, only iron, nickel, and cobalt possess magnetic qualities.
Bear was somewhat less enthusiastic than my former audience, but I regaled her with feats of polarity, ferromagnetism, and magnetic fields …
… For Old Times Sake.
